The Earth Observation (EO) & GIS R&D team in Vienna is part of the MSF GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Centre, which provides value-added support and services to MSF operations through the visualisation and analysis of geospatial data. The primary responsibility of the EO & GIS R&D Team is twofold: within the Earth Observation sub-stream, to provide satellite imagery and associated analyses to the movement (including feature extraction such as buildings, water, floods, and damage assessments); and within the GIS R&D sub-stream, to oversee GIS research and development projects benefiting the MSF movement. The team is part of the wider MSF Austria Operational Support Unit.
In your role as EO Technical Expert, you are responsible for the EO product outlook and the coordination of the technical initiatives for EO, while also responsible for providing day-to-day operational support in your role as a team member in the EO sub-stream.

A minimum annual salary of € 61.650 gross p.a. for 40 hours/week with the option of overpayment up to a maximum of € 74.200 gross p.a. if you bring relevant position-related qualifications and professional experience that go beyond the requirements profile. You will also receive monthly child allowance for dependent children.
What you BRING along
You bring a Master’s degree in Remote Sensing, Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, or a related field, and a minimum of 4 years of professional experience in Earth Observation and GIS. Experience applying EO in humanitarian, disaster management, or climate change contexts is an advantage.
You have strong hands-on experience in EO data processing, troubleshooting, system optimisation and analysis, including proficiency in Python and working with satellite imagery. Familiarity with JavaScript is desirable.
You have a solid understanding of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques applied to EO, with the ability to integrate workflows operationally.
You are proficient in enterprise GIS environments and tools, including Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, and FME, for data storage, data management, processing, automation, and workflow optimisation.
You are familiar with Image Server for managing and delivering EO datasets and integration into the existing environments and tools.
You have knowledge and experience in big data analytics for processing large-scale EO datasets and have experience with cloud platforms such as AWS for EO data storage, processing and analysis.
You have proven experience leading or coordinating EO technical initiatives and delivering operational EO products.
You are a confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills and experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams and external partners, clients, and stakeholders with the ability to translate EO outputs into clear, field-ready products.
You are a team player who can also work independently, take ownership, and proactively manage workload, and demonstrate flexibility based on operational needs.
You have an excellent level of English (spoken and written), knowledge of French is an advantage.

You coordinate and further develop the Earth Observation (EO) technical infrastructure, ensuring robust, high-quality and future-oriented EO services based on MSF’s operational needs.
You manage EO requests through the operational ticketing system, ensuring completeness and compliance with MSF standards.
You lead the continuous improvement of EO workflows, products, data management, and quality standards.
You provide hands-on technical and operational EO support, including user assistance, request handling, and ensuring operational relevance of EO products.
You administer and manage EO content within enterprise GIS environments (e.g. ArcGIS platforms) together with technical counterparts.
You act as a focal point for EO within the GIS Centre, contributing to technical strategy, infrastructure discussions, and cross-team coordination.
You maintain strong relationships with imagery providers, partners, and service providers, and assess new EO technologies and services for their relevance to MSF.
You organise and deliver EO-related training and contribute to capacity building and knowledge transfer across MSF.
You document, disseminate, and promote best practices, ensuring technical and functional documentation remains up to date.
You actively contribute to innovation, research, and the integration of new EO approaches while supporting researchers, volunteers, and project-based initiatives.
You support internal communication, alignment, and advocacy for the use of EO and GIS across MSF, while collaborating closely within a multidisciplinary team.
